Smiling dentistDo you need a new dentist? Maybe you are new to the area and you are looking for good dental services in Sharpsburg, GA. Or perhaps your current dentist is retiring, leaving you to look for a replacement. Whatever the reason, finding a new dentist can be tricky. You likely have dozens nearby to choose from, so how do you find a dentist that will be a good fit for you and your family?

Your Best Strategy

By far, the single most essential thing you can do to be successful in finding a new dentist is to stick to a strict schedule of regular checkups and cleanings for you and your family every 6 months. The importance of this cannot be overstated, both in terms of your oral health and as it relates to your ability to choose a new dentist. Choosing a new dentist after a long lapse in care or in the middle of a dental emergency greatly reduces your ability to choose wisely, but a steady stream of care keeps your teeth in good shape and ensures that you know what is going on in your mouth.

Other Considerations

What factors should you consider when choosing a dentist? First, consider a few logistics, such as the following:

  • Is the dentist on your insurance plan?
  • Is the dentist in a location convenient to your home or office?
  • Do the office hours fit your schedule?
  • Will the dentist see children? A dentist who will care for all members of your family makes life easier.
  • What does the dentist charge for their services? If you need to pay for dental services out of pocket, don’t be shy about shopping around by price, as prices can vary significantly from dentist to dentist.
  • What provisions does the office make for emergency care? Can you contact the dentist outside of normal office hours for an emergency?

Once you have tackled the logistics of a new dentist, you need to consider factors that affect the quality of care you will receive. A great way for you to assess this is to visit the office for a regular checkup. While there, reflect on the following:

  • Dentist and young girlWhat are the qualifications of the dentist? Where did he go to school? What training has she received?
  • What kind of anesthesia do they offer for more invasive dental procedures? If you have trouble with dental work, ask a lot of questions about this and make sure they can give you what you need to be comfortable.
  • Do you feel comfortable in the office? Is it clean and well-organized? Is the staff friendly and professional? You should feel at ease while visiting the office.
  • How do you feel after your appointment? Is your mouth overly sore or sensitive? Since you’ve been receiving regular checkups, you are in a great position to know if the new dentist was rougher on your mouth than necessary.
  • Did the dentist recommend an elaborate treatment plan following your checkup? Again, this is where your strict schedule of checkups is valuable.  You need to know your own teeth. Before embarking on any elaborate treatment plan, do not hesitate to get several opinions. If the problem is real, it should be easily corroborated.

Whatever you do, remember your most important strategy: maintain a schedule of regular checkups and cleanings. Your mouth will thank you!

  1. The consideration to take location into account when choosing a dentist seems like it may be overlooked in some ways to me. I hadn’t really thought of how location plays a part in choosing a dentist, but it makes sense. If you need to visit the dentist regularly, it would be a huge pain to have to travel a large distance for checkups and other procedures. I’d rather have someone located conveniently close to me.

  2. I’m glad you mention how keeping to a strict schedule of regular checkups and cleanings is important for your oral health. Since this is the case, it could be important make sure to choose a dentist that you and your family are comfortable with. In order to do this, you’d probably want to visit the dental office in person so you can meet with the dentist and their staff in order to learn more about their practice and treatments to make sure they’re the best choice.
