Dental Emergencies: What to Do Until You Reach the Dentist

Posted By: wpadmin | July 8, 2017

No one ever wants to have to experience a dental emergency but, unfortunately, it’s something that many people have to endure. Of course, there are tips to help you cope until you can reach a dentist or emergency dental clinic. For tips to help with dental emergencies, you should continue reading below.

Broken Tooth

A broken or chipped tooth will generally be accompanied by bleeding. You should apply pressure to the gums to help stop the bleeding, not directly to the tooth itself. Any fragments or pieces of the tooth should be kept in milk or salt water. That will help to preserve it until you get to the dentist. Your local pharmacy may have some temporary filling material that you could use, or you can use soft wax instead. This should be able to avoid irritation and also help prevent any further damage to the tooth.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth should be placed back into the socket and kept in place. If that isn’t possible, you should use wet gauze (such as from a first-aid kit) for the tooth instead. Ideally, you should get to the dentist within 30 minutes. A knocked-out tooth has a much higher probability of being saved if you can get to the dentist quickly. If your regular dentist isn’t available, you should locate a 24-hour emergency dental clinic instead. You can use a moistened tea bag to help with the pain, and it should be placed gently in the space of the missing tooth. Do not apply any unnecessary pressure.

Cavity Pain or Problems

Cloves or the oil of cloves can help to alleviate some of the pain of a cavity. You can also use ice to help reduce swelling and pain. The ice should not be applied constantly, but should be applied off and on over a period of time. When the ice becomes too uncomfortable, you can remove it and replace it later. Aspirin should never be placed directly to the inside of your mouth. You can rinse with a lukewarm salt water solution to alleviate some of the swelling. This will also help to detoxify your mouth, which can prevent infection. Some people have discovered that vanilla extract can be used to relieve some of the pain. You can apply the extract to a cotton ball and then place the cotton ball on the affected area. You can use a very gentle massaging of the gums to help remove any irritants, but flossing should be done very gently and not for an extended period of time. You don’t want to exacerbate the issue by causing additional irritation.

Bitten Tongue or Lip

This is perhaps the most common dental emergency, and in most cases it will be fairly easy to handle. You can apply a cold compress to your lip to help reduce swelling. If you can’t tolerate the pain without assistance, you can use ibuprofen or naproxen sodium to help with the pain. However, you should only take medication if you know that you have been able to take it safely in the past, and you should never exceed the recommended dosage. You should always read and follow the directions on the bottle. With the cold compress, you can apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding. If you still need emergency dental assistance in Sharpsburg, GA, you should go to a hospital or a dental emergency clinic. It’s possible that you may require stitches.

  1. I like what you recommend about using ice to help reduce swelling before getting to the dentist. It makes sense that this is important to ensure the gums don’t become damaged due them being bitten, etc. Thanks for the post; I think this could be very helpful for my son because he tends to get a lot of mouth problems and knowing how to handle them before making it to the dentist could be helpful.
